DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT

BEATING PSYCHOLOGICAL CRISIS IN DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT

(Interview with Dr Bolbukh from Special hospital for addiction diseases Dr Vorobiev)

Alcohol and drug addiction problems are not easy to talk about. Many people are even ashamed to admit it to closest friends an family. The inability to solve the problem is considered to be a weakness of character. According to statistics, almost every family runs a minimum period of three years from the moment of encounter with narcotics to appeals for help. The first reaction is usually insufficient assessment of the severity of the situation and the desire to believe that the problem will be solved without a lot of fuss. At this stage, parents hear that marijuana is not a narcotic, there is no reason for anxiety, that their child stopped taking it and that his red eyes are the result of tiredness. After these explanations he promises that he would not do anything foolish again until, after a brief period of normal behavior he crashes the car and the test show the presence of narcotics. Or, he drops from school, or has huge unexplainable debts, or the police start knocking on the door in the middle of the night. After this the stage of taking action begins. Parents begin to introduce elements of control: checking his phone, gather information about friends, periodically testing for drugs…. However, after some time, relapses happen, debts, running away from home.

After these occurrences he is lead to a psychologist, or psychiatrist, put on antidepressants, or sent to his relatives out of the city or even sent to a commune. But only about 15-20 percent of the people may be helped this way. Some stop for a while, make a little brake. It usually passes three to four years to the moment when a person seeks medical help. However, the first attempts of the treatment are often unsuccessful. The patient considers detoxification necessary but a discussion on the topic of psychotherapy, or necessity to change the circle of friends and lifestyle is considered stupidity or a desire to take the patient more money. And here arises a very important moment.

Why the treatment doesn’t work? Why many say that they were treated several times, but are still using? Does the patient understand the harmful effects of drugs but are so stupid to start using again?

An addict knows what price needs to be paid for using. Much better than us doctors. But that is only a part of his personality, and the second part of the personality always says: “I will not take that much, just now, only once and that’s it …” In essence, fluctuations, volatility and unpredictability are defining characteristics of all addicts. They promise one thing in the morning and other in the evening, deceiving, blaming others. All this is a result of changes in personality, demolition of voluntary mechanisms that go along with an imbalance in the system of natural hormones of pleasure and represent a trigger for drug addiction, dependence. By that time, the man was already really sick. His psyche is like a wrecked car, in which he constantly adds the gas, the brakes have long been burnt, and he himself will not stop until there is fuel in powder form.

There is probably nothing stronger than heroin in the world. Opioids cause compulsion – an irresistible desire to feel their effect again. Therefore, pills and conversations are not enough to cure that. Medical sciences progresses constantly.  Some time ago listening through a wooden pipe was used for the diagnosis of pneumonia, and now tomography can accurately see the damaged part. There are antibiotics today that can cure previously deadly disease in seven days. Efficient ways of painless detoxification exist today, when a person is cleaned from the hardest substances without pain and suffering. But, the most important thing is to get rid of cravings – stubborn, obsessive thoughts about the drug. Dreams, memories, sadness, apathy and lethargy become causes of relapse.

How to overcome a psychological crisis?

We use a new method for overcoming psychological crisis. The patient receives medicines that affect the processes of memorizing and then using the apparatus for audio-visual stimulation we can create a powerful impact on information. Our psyche, behavior, habits are a complex of reflexes that create our experience. Information therapy is very effective in helping to erase junkie reflexes. The subconscious comes back to its place – what is good and what is not. They don’t even think about drugs, their head is clear – this is how patients describe their condition after information therapy was done. They changed their attitude towards drugs, they become indifferent and often don’t like to remember the past, regret for mistakes they made. To preserve the achieved results, the apparatus is used to normalize the synthesis of our natural hormones satisfaction – endorphins. Tran cranial electro stimulation or N.E.T. therapy was applied in Russia, England, and Switzerland for about 15 years. The use of this therapy so effectively eliminates the psychological crisis that Scotland authorities suggested this method as a replacement for official methadone program. Thanks to new methods of treatment, efficiency greatly increases the chances of success. Patient gets back control of his emotions; he no longer lives in a dark wasteland but looks forward to every new day. “He is as he was before, he is communicative, we are back together …” – we often hear these words at the controls. Healing was not only possible, but it is totally realistic. Drug addiction is no longer a death sentence. Contact us on time and we will help.
